Scream – 2022

Dir: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett

Starring: Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, & Melissa Barrera

The original Scream made its groundbreaking debut in 1996 with one of the most recognizable killers in horror history. Ghostface quickly joined the ranks of slasher icons like Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Kruger. Scream launched a 4 movie franchise under the direction of Wes Craven, inspired the spin-off comedy movies Scary Movie, and a tv series starring Willa Fitzgerald. Scream had such a foothold in pop culture that even the horror avoidant came to know the mask and the ominous line What’s your favorite scary movie?. The 5th movie in the franchise released on January 14, 2022 to mostly positive reviews. It scored a 78% on the tomatometer with an impressive audience rating of 82% and a 7.1/10 on IMDB.

Rosemary’s Baby – 2015

Dir: Angieszka Holland

Starring: Zoe Saldana, Patrick J. Adams, Carole Bouquet

Rosemary’s Baby was originally a novel by Ira Levin released in 1967 and was responsible for the subsequent prosperity of the horror genre over the next few years. The next year the first movie adaptation came out starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes and was directed by Roman Polanski. The original version of the film is widely regarded as one of the best horror films of all time, won approximately 10 awards, and was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. With the original being so good and so widely respected, I do not understand why they chose to remake this movie. The standards are so high, it would have to be flawless in every way to not be a total flop. Unfortunately, this movie was far from flawless.

Cam – 2018

Dir:  Daniel Goldhaber

Starring: Madeline Brewer

Cam is about an up-and-coming camgirl trying to break into the top 50 performers on the site. Her channel gets stolen by another performer that seems to look exactly like her and is using her identity. I went into this movie completely blind. I knew absolutely nothing about it, besides the small blurb on Netflix, and I honestly expected low quality and more of an excuse for soft-core porn than a real horror. But it’s labeled as a psychological horror and I’m a sucker for anything in that subgenre, so I gave it a shot. It both surpassed my expectations and let me down, a very strange combination and I’m still confused by it as I write this.

Jack the ripper museum

Like every other depressed Millenial, I love true crime and serial killers. So when I had the opportunity to spend the summer in London I knew I to do something pertaining to Jack the Ripper.

Despite only having 5 canonical victims, and his spree happening 130 years ago, Jack The Ripper is still a huge tourist attraction. Multiple companies offer walking tours and have large, sensationalized exhibits and guides through Whitechapel but I wanted something less “tourist-y”. I did a bit of digging and attempted to find something smaller, something more intimate. I wanted a museum or tour that I felt would rely on objective facts versus the sensationalized and brutal nature of his crimes and his unknown identity.

Bad Ben – 2016

Director: Nigel Bach

Staring: Nigel Bach

So, the run time on this movie is 86 minutes and it’s probably some of the most confusing minutes of my life. Some of the moments were genuinely creepy and elicited an air of suspense. Some of it, however, was laughable and I couldn’t believe how idiotic the character was. After the movie ended I decided to do a little research into the director, Nigel Bach, and see if I could form a more concrete opinion and I was delighted with some of the information I found. I found out that all of the dialogue was done ad-lib (which is almost painful to watch, more on that later in the review) and the movie is shot in his actual house using real surveillance cameras he installed to monitor the care of his mother as she aged. He isn’t a trained actor or director and the whole thing cost him like $300 to do. I initially had a very harsh opinion but after learning all of this I’m honestly impressed. As bad as some of the acting and effects are at times, it’s still far and away better than anything I could do.
