The Block island sound – 2020

Dir: Kevin McManus & Matthew McManus

Staring: Chris Sheffield, Michaela McManus, Neville Archambault

If you went into this expecting a “true” horror, like I did, you’re going to be disappointed. However, I’m so glad I watched it because I’m extremely pleased with this movie.

There are spoilers beyond this point so proceed with caution

The basic premise is that fish have been washing up dead by the ton on the beach of Block Island. Former island resident and current EPA employee, Audry (Michaela McManus), has been assigned to investigate the strange occurrence. She brings her daughter and returns home to find out that her father, Tom (Neville Archambault), has been displaying erratic behavior and becoming increasingly unstable. After Tom passes, her brother (Chris Sheffield) begins displaying the same behaviors. Harry begins having violent outbursts, auditory hallucinations, visions of his deceased father, and loses chunks of time in which he can not account for his whereabouts. He eventually seeks medical  help but they are unable to give him any answers.

Even though this is a review I won’t spoil the ending by adding any more than that because it really is not at all what I expected. I will just say that this is the kind of twist that could’ve gone very wrong and been ridiculous but they handle it so well it fits perfectly in with the story. This is much more of a slow burn movie and there isn’t any actual ‘scares’ so I’m a little surprised they labeled it as horror but some of the imagery is very creepy and weird. Archambault is fantastic and he’s such a menacing presence in Harry’s visions. The Sound that carries throughout the psychotic episodes is incredibly threatening without being annoying. Prometheus tried that with a sort of high-pitched whistle but it just felt annoying and unnecessary

The only part that kind of threw me was that when Harry has medical tests run and the doctors are unable to find anything medically wrong with him, they suggest electromagnetic hypersensitivity. No doctor would ever actually suggest an allergy to electricity because it’s absurd. There’s no backing or evidence for it, it can’t be medically diagnosed. I get why they did it, they needed characters to meet to further the story but, using something more believable than EHS would’ve been better in my opinion. Honestly though, that’s my only real complaint about the entire movie. I thought it was great start to finish, gave me everything I wanted, and an ending I didn’t know I needed. Due to the ending, I have seen it getting a lot of mixed reviews on other sites. Have you seen the Block Island Sound? Did you enjoy it? Drop a comment in the box and let me know, I would love to hear your opinion.

Suspensefully yours,

Morticia
